Apart for GPRS and SMS you can also contact on Indian railway helpline number from you device. The official helpline number is 139, after calling on that number follow the command of voice to get exact PNR status. that may me chargeable

Ticket Status Explained
In india government allows typically advance reservation upto 60days before the journeys date in advance. it will have a better chance of getting a confirmed ticket by booking early. The Wagon and ticket numbers will be printed on the ticket. In case the confirmed ticket are not availabe ,then you will get RAC or WL ticket.
RAC means for Reservation against Cancellation, that says the person don't have a reserved ticket, but you can sit in the train and class by an accommodation of your choice. And there is much possibilities that your sit will be confirmed due to last person cancellations closer to travels date.RAC person can seat on the two side chairs. If the sits are available due to cancellation, then RAC person will get the sit, and other can covert side chairs.
persons with WL tickets means waitng list status they don't have sitting accommodation because they didn't have any guaranted ticket. If any sufficient confirmed or person with RAC ticket cancelling their reservation then they get sitting accommodate on sits. The WL tickets are fixed by railway officials, and once the WL ticket list reaches to maximum level, the railway start refuses ticketing system with REGRET status.
In both RAC/WL tickets have two numbers For eg:-WL21/WL15,WL13/RAC20 etc.
First number W - shows the ticket status
second number L - your current location
It has 4 cancellation and your waiting list status has improve to 15
